These lawmakers, including Reps. Chip Roy, Ralph Norman, Andrew Clyde, and Josh Brecheen, ultimately voted against the measure, joining Democrats on the panel.
The vote tally was 16-21, meaning the bill did not advance out of the committee at that time.
One member, Rep. Lloyd Smucker, initially voted yes but changed his vote to no to preserve the committee's ability to potentially reconsider the bill later, indicating continued support for the concept.
'I fully support the One Big Beautiful Bill," he said in a post on X.
The outcome signaled that more discussion and compromise are needed to bridge the gaps on specific policy provisions within the conference.
Pushing for Unity to Achieve Legislative Goals
Following the committee vote, President Trump weighed in, emphasizing the importance of Republican unity to pass key conservative reforms.
He took to his Truth Social platform to urge lawmakers to rally behind the legislation.
Highlighting the stakes of advancing conservative priorities, Trump called for focus and action from within the party ranks.
He specifically called out those he saw as hindering the process.
President Trump stated:
"Republicans MUST UNITE behind, "THE ONE, BIG BEAUTIFUL BILL!"
"We don't need "GRANDSTANDERS" in the Republican Party. STOP TALKING, AND GET IT DONE!"
His message underscores the leadership's desire to see the conference come together and overcome legislative roadblocks to deliver on policy promises.
While the committee vote marks a temporary pause, efforts are expected to continue to refine the bill and build the necessary support to achieve its ambitious goals.
